Gorges, Sir Arthur

Gorges, Sir Arthur (1557–1625), courtier and poet, was a close friend of Ralegh. His love poems Vannetyes and Toyes of Yowth were not published until 1953; other works include The Olympian Catastrophe (1612), an elegy on Prince Henry; Lucans Pharsalia (1614), a powerful rendering of Lucan's epic into rhyming tetrameters; and a translation of F. Bacon's Wisedome of the Ancients in 1619.
