Gilman, Charlotte (Anna) Perkins (1860–1935), born in Connecticut, American feminist and journalist, and author of
Women and Economics (1898),
Concerning Children (1900), and
The Home: Its Work and Influence (1903). She wrote several novels, but is best remembered for her disturbing short story, ‘The Yellow Wallpaper’, published in May 1892 in the
New England Magazine. It chronicles the descent into madness of a young mother isolated in a country colonial mansion, and confined to a room with paper of ‘a smouldering unclean yellow’, in which she discerns sinister patterns and, eventually, the movements of imprisoned women. The story may be read as a simple ghost story or as a feminist text.
