Garnett, Constance (1862–1946), mother of D. Garnett, was responsible for introducing many of the great Russian classics to English readers. She translated Turgenev, Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, Chekhov, Gogol, and Herzen; her versions, although now superseded, had enormous impact and influence in their day.
