Game at Chesse, A

Game at Chesse, A, a comedy by T.Middleton, produced 1624, when it successfully ran for nine nights at the Globe until suppressed by the authorities.

It deals allegorically with the rivalry of England and Spain and the project of the ‘Spanish Marriage’ (1623). It places on the stage the sovereigns of the two countries, Charles, prince of Wales, Buckingham, and the Spanish ambassador Gondomar. The play, reflecting the popular aversion to the Spanish match, gave great offence to the Spanish ambassador and to King James.
