Furnivall, Frederick James

Furnivall, Frederick James (1825–1910), was secretary to the Philological Society; in 1861 he became editor of the proposed New English Dictionary which developed into the Oxford English Dictionary. He founded the Early English Text Society, the Chaucer Society, the Ballad Society, and the New Shakespere Society, the Wyclif, the Browning, and the Shelley societies, and himself edited many texts. He was also a leader in the move for popular education, supported women's rights, and taught grammar at the Working Men's College founded in 1854.
