Fox, Charles James (1749–1806), a great Whig statesman and orator, who first made his mark by speeches against Wilkes in 1769. He was one of the managers of the proceedings against Warren Hastings, and a constant opponent of the policy of Pitt. He was a man of great personal charm, noted for his scholarship but also for his gambling and drinking and the bad influence he exercised over the prince of Wales. He was elected a member of Dr Johnson's Club (1774).
