Flaubert, Gustave (1821–80), French novelist. His first and best-known novel, Madame Bovary (1857), is one of the landmarks of 19th-cent. fiction, distinguished for its psychological insight, impersonal narrative method, and harmonious style: other works include Salammbô (1862), L'Éducation sentimentale (1869), and Trois Contes (1877). Flaubert was claimed both by the realists and the naturalists, and the objectivity of his method and authenticity of his detail, contrasting with the sentimentality and melodrama of much 19th-cent. English fiction, had a great influence on late 19th-cent. British writers, including Arnold Bennett and G. A. Moore.
