Fatal Dowry, The, a tragedy by
Massinger and
Field, acted
c.1617–19, printed 1632. The play is based on one of the
controversiae (or imaginary legal disputes) of Seneca the elder. The ‘dowry’ is Beaumelle, the bride presented to Charalois by her father Rochfort: Charalois kills Beaumelle's lover Novall, stabs Beaumelle in accordance with Rochfort's condemnation, then is himself killed by a friend of Novall.
Rowe's
The Fair Penitent is founded on this play.
