The diary covers 15 months of the life of Charles Pooter in the early 1890s. His entries describing the events of his life with his wife Carrie in Brickfield Terrace, Holloway, reveal in cumulative detail the society of anxious gentility in which he lives. Pooter emerges as worthy, deferential, and acutely sensitive to minor humiliations. Text and illustrations reveal much precise contemporary background.
