Desai, Anita (1937– ), novelist and short- story writer, born in India and educated in Delhi; her father was Bengali, her mother German. Her elegant and lucid novels, which vividly evoke the atmosphere, society, and landscapes of India, include
Fire on the Mountain (1977) and
Clear Light of Day (1980).
Games at Twilight (1978) and
Diamond Dust and Other Stories (2000) are collections of short stories. Her other works include
In Custody (1984),
Baumgartner's Bombay (1988),
Journey to Ithaca (1995), and
