Demosthenes (c.383–322 bc), Athenian orator and prose writer whose reputation rested on the excellence of his style. His ideals were lofty, his policies statesmanlike. His orations roused his countrymen to the danger of the subjugation of Greece by Philip of Macedon (hence the word ‘philippic’). T. Wilson's translation of the Philippics appeared in 1570.
