Dada (Fr. ‘hobby-horse’ a name chosen at random from a dictionary), a movement in art and literature founded
c.1916 in Zurich and more or less simultaneously in New York. The movement's aim was nihilistic, a denial of sense or order; it lasted until the mid-1920s, with Paris as its centre from 1920. Writers connected with Dada included Tristan Tzara, who appears as a character in Stoppard's
Travesties. Notable among Dada artists were Hans Arp, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray.
