Colenso, John William (1814–83), a mathematician who became bishop of Natal. He was denounced for his strong views on Zulu polygamy in relation to Christian conversion and for applying the Christian ethic to the problem of race relations in southern Africa. His commentary on
St Paul's Epistle to the Romans (1861) aroused a storm of controversy by its repudiation of much orthodox sacramental theology and its denial of everlasting punishment;
The Pentateuch and the Book of Joshua Critically Examined (1862–79) challenged the traditional historical accuracy and authorship of these books.
