Christmas-Eve and Easter-Day, a poem by R. Browning, published 1850. The poem is in two parts, in octosyllabic metre, with an irregular rhyme-scheme. ‘Christmas-Eve’, in narrative form, combining realistic and visionary elements, accepts that denominational religion is an imperfect medium for divine truth, but emphasizes the need to choose the best method of worship according to one's lights. ‘Easter-Day’, in the form of an imagined dialogue, examines the difficulties of holding to the Christian faith at all, and argues that the condition of doubt is, in fact, essential to the existence of human faith.
