Children in the Wood, The, popularly known as the story of the Babes in the Wood, is the subject of an old ballad, included in
Percy's and
Ritson's collections.
A Norfolk gentleman leaves his property to his infant son and daughter and gives the children into his brother's charge; the wicked uncle hires two ruffians to slay them in a wood. One of these repents and kills his fellow, then abandons the children in the wood. The children perish, and a robin covers them with leaves.
