Chandler, Raymond

Chandler, Raymond (1888–1959), American writer of thrillers and detective stories. His first novel, The Big Sleep (1939), introduced his detective narrator, cool, attractive, wise-cracking, lonely tough-guy, Philip Marlowe. Later works include Farewell, My Lovely (1940), The High Window (1942), The Lady in the Lake (1943), and The Long Goodbye (1953), all of which were filmed.
