Cavendish, Margaret, duches of Newcastle (1623–73), daughter of Sir Thomas Lucas, was the second wife of William Cavendish. She wrote poems, plays, letters, and a vivid biography of her husband (1667). Dismissed as ‘mad, conceited and ridiculous’ by
Pepys, she was nevertheless praised (and influenced) by
Hobbes; both C.
Lamb and V.
Woolf wrote of her with sympathy. Her intellectual curiosity was omnivorous, and she was one of the first women to attend a meeting of the
Royal Society. Her
autobiography,
A True Relation of My Birth, Breeding and Life, was appended to her collection of fictions,
Nature's Pictures (1656). She regarded the female intelligence as distinguished by its fantastical quality, which she demonstrated by wearing outrageous fashions of her own devising.
