Castle of Indolence, The, a poem in Spenserian stanzas by J.
Thomson (1700–48), published 1748.
It consists of two cantos, of which the first describes the castle of the wizard Indolence, into which he entices weary pilgrims who sink into torpor amidst luxurious ease; the inmates, becoming diseased, are thrown into a dungeon to languish. The second canto describes the conquest of the castle by the knight of Arts and Industry.
