Carew (pron. Carey), Thomas (1594/5–1640), one of the best-known of the Cavalier poets. He won the favour of Charles I, was appointed to an office at court, and received an estate from him. He was much influenced by Jonson and by Donne; his elegy for Donne was published with Donne's poems in 1633. His works include the masque Coelum Britannicum (1634), many graceful, witty, and often cynical songs and lyrics, and several longer poems including the erotic ‘A Rapture’. Carew's Poems appeared in 1640.
