Caretaker, The

Caretaker, The, a play by H. Pinter, performed and published in 1960.

One of Pinter's characteristically enigmatic dramas, it is built on the interaction of three characters, the tramp Davies and the brothers Aston and Mick. Aston has rescued Davies from a brawl and brought him back to a junk-filled room, in which he offers Davies a bed and, eventually, an ill-defined post as caretaker, although it emerges that the flat actually belongs to his brother. The characters reveal themselves in inconsequential dialogue and obsessional monologue. In the end both brothers turn on Davies, after he has tried to play the one off against the other, and evict him.
