Buchanan, Robert Williams (1841–1901), published many novels, poems, and plays (most of which are now forgotten). He is remembered largely for his attacks on Swinburne (whom he satirized in a poem ‘The Session of the Poets’ in the Spectator, 1866) and on the Pre-Raphaelites, principally D. G. Rossetti, whom he attacked in ‘The Fleshly School of Poetry’ in the Contemporary Review (1871) under the pseudonym ‘Thomas Maitland’. After Rossetti's death he recanted in an essay in A Look round Literature (1887).
