Brougham, Henry Peter, Baron Brougham and Vaux

Brougham, Henry Peter, Baron Brougham and Vaux (1778–1868), rose to be lord chancellor. His distinguished legal career included the defence of Queen Caroline in 1820. He played an important part in the founding of London University. In the history of literature he is remembered principally as one of the founders, with Jeffrey and Sydney Smith, of the Edinburgh Review in 1802. He is said to have been the author of the disparaging article on Hours of Idleness in the Edinburgh Review of Jan. 1808, which provoked Byron into writing English Bards and Scotch Reviewers.

The brougham, a one-horse closed carriage, with two or four wheels, is named after him.
