Boyle, Robert (1627–91), became the dominant figure in English science between F.
Bacon and I.
Newton. His experiments on air led to the formulation of ‘Boyle's Law’. Boyle's ‘corpuscularianism’, a rendering of the mechanical philosophy, exercised great influence throughout Europe. Among his more popular scientific writings
The Sceptical Chymist (1661) is the best known and
The Origin of Forms and Qualities (1666) anticipates much of the philosophy of
Locke. His
Occasional Reflections (1665) supplied Swift with one of the central storylines in
Gulliver's Travels. In his Will he made provision for the foundation of a series of annual lectures in defence of natural and revealed religion. The first series of Boyle Lectures was delivered by Richard
Bentley in 1692. The influence of these lectures was at its peak during their first 20 years.
