Beppo: A Venetian Story

Beppo: A Venetian Story a poem in ottava rima by Byron, published in 1818. This poem, in which Byron began to find the voice and style of Don Juan, marked a turning point in his career. It tells with great zest and style the story of a Venetian carnival, at which a lady's husband, Beppo, who has been absent for many years, returns in Turkish garb, and confronts her and her cavalier servente. Byron's praise of Italy's climate and women is offset by his lengthy satirical asides about English rain and English misses who ‘smell of bread and butter’.
