Balfour, Arthur James, first earl of Balfour

Balfour, Arthur James, first earl of Balfour (1848–1930), philosopher and statesman, notable in a literary connection as the author of philosophic and other works. These include A Defence of Philosophic Doubt (1879), Questionings on Criticism and Beauty (Romanes Lecture, 1909), Decadence ( Henry Sidgwick Memorial Lecture, 1908), Theism and Humanism (Gifford Lectures, 1915), Theism and Thought (Gifford Lectures, 1923), and Chapters of Autobiography (1930, ed. Mrs Dugdale). In 1893 he was president of the Society for Psychical Research.
