Atheist's Tragedy, The, a tragedy by
Tourneur, printed 1611. D'Amville, the ‘atheist’, seeks to marry his son Rousard to Castabella. She loves his nephew Charlemont, who is sent abroad on military service, then falsely reported dead: Castabella marries Rousard. Charlemont returns, but is urged by the ghost of his murdered father not to seek revenge. D'Amville's sons die, then he himself dies in an attempt to murder Charlemont. Charlemont and Castabella are reunited. The play is a form of ‘anti-revenge’ drama. (See
revenge tragedy.)
