Apocalypse, the, from a Greek verb meaning ‘to disclose’, a ‘revelation’ or an ‘unveiling’, and the title given to the book of Revelation in the NT. The term ‘apocalyptic literature’ is used in a broader sense to describe prophetic writings generally, of a range which includes many of the works of
Blake, of
Yeats (e.g. ‘The Second Coming’), D.
Lessing's The Four-Gated City, the ‘disaster’ novels of J. G.
Ballard, and other
science fiction writers.
