Alton Locke, Tailor and Poet: An Autobiography, a novel by C.
Kingsley, published 1850. The narrator, son of a small London tradesman and educated by a widowed Baptist mother, is apprenticed to a sweating tailor in whose workshop he experiences at first hand the miseries of the working classes and becomes imbued with the ideas of
Chartism. The novel, despite its weaknesses, is a powerful social document. See also
social problem novel.
