Agamemnon of Aeschylus, The

Agamemnon of Aeschylus, The, a translation by R. Browning, published 1877. It aroused controversy because of its uncompromising literalness. The translation may be taken as an attack on the Hellenism of, e.g., M. Arnold; by making his own version ‘literally’ unreadable, Browning countered Arnold's claim that the Greeks were masters of the ‘grand style’.
