Aesthetic movement, a movement which blossomed during the 1880s, heavily influenced by the
Pre-Raphaelites,
Ruskin, and
Pater, in which the adoption of sentimental archaism as the ideal of beauty was carried to extravagant lengths and often accompanied by affectation of speech and manner and eccentricity of dress. It and its followers (e.g.
Wilde) were much ridiculed in
Punch, in
Gilbert and Sullivan's
Patience (1881), etc. See also
