Zebra. A group of four German painters formed in Hamburg in 1965 for exhibition and promotional purposes: Dieter Asmus (1939– ), Peter Nagel (1942– ), Nikolaus Störtenbecker (1940– ), and Dietmar Ullrich (1940– ). They worked in a figurative style, influenced by photography but non-naturalistic in colouring. Often they used a convention of depicting living things in greys or near-greys and inanimate objects in bright colours, and usually maintained a distance between the figural content and the flat poster-like background. Their work was widely exhibited in Germany and elsewhere (for example at Fischer Fine Art, London, in 1975).
