Youngerman, Jack

Youngerman, Jack (1926– ). American painter, sculptor, graphic artist, and designer, born in Louisville, Kentucky. After studying at the universities of North Carolina, 1944–6, and Missouri, 1947, he attended the École des Beaux-Arts, Paris, 1947–8, and remained in Europe until 1956, when he settled in New York. ‘He then became known for bringing a special Matisse-like rhythm and grace to the Constructivist tradition by rendering leaf, flower or butterfly forms with the brilliantly coloured flatness and clarity of Hard-Edge painting’ ( H. H. Arnason, A History of Modern Art, 3rd edn., revised by Daniel Wheeler, 1986). Apart from paintings his work has included brilliantly coloured lithographs and screenprints, with sharply outlined abstract shapes, and he has also made sculpture.
