Vivancos, Miguel García

Vivancos, Miguel García (1895–1972). Spain's best-known naive painter, born in Mazarron, Murcia. He worked in Barcelona at various jobs (chauffeur, docker, glazier), then after fighting in the Spanish Civil War escaped to France in 1938. During the German occupation he was held in a concentration camp. In 1944 he settled in Paris, where he was employed in a clothing firm as a painter on silk and began to paint on his own. He attracted the attention of André Breton, who wrote about him and introduced his work to dealers. During the 1950s he had one-man shows in several Paris galleries and was included in international exhibitions of naive art. He painted mainly architectural subjects and cityscapes in a manner akin to that of Vivin.
