Vaughan, Keith (1912–77). British painter, draughtsman, designer, and writer, born in Selsey, Sussex. From 1931 to 1939 he worked in the art department of an advertising agency, painting—self-taught—in his spare time. In the Second World War he served in the St John's Ambulance Brigade and the Pioneer Corps and as a clerk in a prisoner-of-war camp in Yorkshire. After the war he taught part-time at various art schools in London, notably the Slade School (from 1954), and travelled extensively. In the 1940s, with his friend John
Minton, he was one of the leading exponents of
Neo-Romanticism, characteristic works of this time being coloured drawings of moonlit houses. His post-war work, in which he concentrated on his favourite themes of landscapes and male nudes in a landscape setting, became grander and more simplified, moving towards abstraction (
Leaping Figure, Tate Gallery, London, 1951). Some of his late pictures are almost pure abstracts, the rich slabs of paint giving only the merest suggestion of natural forms. He had numerous one-man shows of his paintings, and his output also included textile designs and book-jackets. Occasionally he did larger works, including an abstract ceramic mural for a bus-shelter in Corby New Town, Northamptonshire (1954; destroyed). His varied activities brought him critical and financial success, but he felt deep insecurity about his work and his role in life, as is revealed in his book
Journal and Drawings (1966), extracts from a diary he had begun in 1939. A new edition,
Journals 1939–1977, edited by Alan Ross, appeared in 1989. As well as containing many perceptive comments about art, it gives a remarkably frank (and often highly amusing) account of Vaughan's homosexual and masturbatory activities (the first edition was much less explicit) and movingly chronicles the struggle with cancer that led to his suicide. He made ‘sex trousers’ with a constricting silk codpiece and contrived an electronic masturbating device (his beloved ‘black box'), and wrote that although he listed his recreations in the
International Who's Who as ‘Eating and drinking with friends, bathing in the Ionian Sea', what he should say was ‘Drinking alone, sexual self-pleasuring with autoerotic devices'.
