Valori plastici. An art periodical published in Rome from 1918 to 1921 in both Italian and French editions (it was originally a monthly but became bi-monthly). The editor and publisher was Mario Broglio (1891–1948), a critic and painter, who was conservative in outlook. The first number contained articles by Carrà, de Chirico, and Savinio setting forth the ideals of Metaphysical Painting. Under the Fascist regime Valori plastici was one of the few channels that informed the Italian public about current trends elsewhere in Europe (it carried articles on Cubism and De Stijl, for example). However, the main tenor of the journal—supported by Carrà and de Chirico—was in favour of a return to the Italian classical tradition of naturalism and fine craftsmanship, and European avant-garde movements were criticized for forsaking the principles of that tradition.
