Tériade

Tériade (pseudonym of Efstratios Eleftheriades) (1897–1983). Greek critic, editor, and publisher, active in France. In 1915 he moved to Paris to study law, but he turned to art, working for Cahiers d'art, founded by his countryman Christian Zervos, and then from 1933 to 1936 serving as artistic director on Albert Skira's Minotaure, a journal that became famous for its superb production values. He worked on other publishing projects for Skira, and in 1937 founded the bilingual (French and English) review Verve, which continued until 1960 (38 numbers appearing irregularly, with publication suspended in 1940–3). This covered a wide range of artistic and literary subjects, with a good deal of material on contemporary French art, and it was opulently produced, becoming famous for its high-quality colour illustrations. Its success enabled Tériade to set up a publishing company called Éditions Verve, whose output included 26 livres d'artistes (among them three by Chagall that had been commissioned by Vollard but left unfinished at his death in 1939). Éditions Verve's other publications included albums of photographs by Henri Cartier-Bresson (1908–2004), revered as one of the greatest of all photographers (he is also a painter and draughtsman). Tériade wrote a book on Léger (1928) as well as art criticism that was published in various journals. An exhibition devoted to him was held at the Grand Palais, Paris, in 1973.
