Salt, John

Salt, John (1937– ). British painter and graphic artist. He studied at the College of Art in his native Birmingham and at the Slade School, London. After teaching at various art colleges, he moved to New York in 1967 and lived there until 1978. In the USA his style changed abruptly from a mechanical style of abstraction to Superrealism and by the mid1970s he had become one of the best-known artists working in this vein. His main theme is the automobile, particularly cars that have been wrecked or abandoned and left to rust.
