Roussel, Theodore

Roussel, Theodore (1847–1926). French painter and etcher who settled in England in the 1870s. He was a friend of Whistler and was influenced by him in his paintings and his prints. Whereas Whistler experimented only mildy with colour printmaking, however, Roussel became fascinated by it and developed new techniques and production processes; he was president of the Society of Graver-Printers in Colour. His paintings included portraits, landscapes, and genre subjects, but he is now remembered primarily for a beautiful nude, The Reading Girl (Tate Gallery, London, 1886–7). Frank Rutter wrote that ‘At the time when it was added to our national collection [1927], Sir William Orpen publicly stated his opinion that this was the finest nude painted in his time’ (Modern Masterpieces, 1940).
