New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York. Museum devoted to contemporary art (meaning in this instance work done within the last ten years), founded in 1977 by Marcia Tucker (1940– ), formerly a curator at the Whitney Museum of American Art. It was originally called the New Museum and was located in the New School of Social Research on Fifth Avenue. In 1983 it moved to its present premises at 583 Broadway, a handsome late 19th-century building. The museum is devoted mainly to temporary exhibitions, but it also has a small ‘semi-permanent’ collection, works being periodically sold to buy others (as in the early days of the
Museum of Modern Art, New York).
