Metzinger, Jean (1883–1956). French painter (mainly of still-life, landscapes, and figure compositions) and writer on art. He was born in Nantes, where he studied at the Académie des Beaux-Arts, and moved to Paris after three of his paintings sold well at the Salon des Indépendants in 1903. After passing through Neo-Impressionist and Fauvist phases, he became one of the earliest devotees of
Cubism and a central figure of the Section d'Or group. He was undistinguished as a painter and is remembered mainly as the coauthor with
Gleizes of the book
Du Cubisme (1912), the first book to be published on the movement. In the year in which the book appeared, Metzinger painted a portrait of Gleizes (Museum of Art, Rhode Island School of Design, Providence). In the 1920s he turned from Cubism to a more naturalistic style, but from about 1940 he made a partial return to his earlier manner.
