Lubarda, Petar (1907–1974). Yugoslav painter, born at Ljubotinje. He studied briefly in Belgrade and Paris (at the École des
Beaux-Arts), but he was mainly self-taught as an artist. He lived in Paris from 1926 to 1932, exhibiting at the Salon des Indépendants. On returning to Yugoslavia he founded his own art school at Cetinje. Lubarda's painting was inspired mainly by the landscape of his native Montenegro, a harsh country of mountains and rocks against the deep blue of sea and sky, his work evolving from
Expressionism towards abstraction. He also painted scenes from his country's history and legends. His work influenced many younger Yugoslav painters.
