Le Moal, Jean (1909– ). French painter and designer, born at Authon-de-Perche of Breton stock. He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts, Lyons, and then from 1935 to 1938 at the Académie Ranson, where—like many other students—he was influenced by Roger Bissière. Le Moal was an exponent of Lyrical Abstraction, the type of painting that dominated the École de Paris in the late 1940s and 1950s. Like his contemporaries Bazaine, Estève, Manessier, and Singier, he evolved his abstractions from impressions made by natural appearances. His style was characterized by linear arabesques interspersed with spots and flecks of colour. Le Moal also designed stage decor and stained glass.
