Indiana, Robert (1928– ). American painter, sculptor, and graphic artist, born in New Castle, Indiana. His original name was Robert Clark, but he adopted the name of his native state as his own. He studied successively in Indianapolis, Ithaca, Chicago, Edinburgh, and London before settling in New York in 1956. He is regarded as one of the leading American Pop artists, and although he has done some figurative paintings he is best known for pictures involving geometric shapes emblazoned with lettering and signs. His vivid colours often create effects of visual ambiguity reminiscent of those of
Op art. In 1964 Indiana collaborated with Andy
Warhol in a film
Eat and in the same year executed a commission for the exterior decoration of the New York State Pavilion at the New York World's Fair consisting of a 6-metre sign reading EAT. He has also done many sculptures of letters forming the word LOVE. In 1978 he settled on the island of Vinalhaven, off the Maine coast.
