Hirschfeld-Mack, Ludwig (1893–1965). German-Australian abstract painter, experimental artist, and teacher, born in Frankfurt. While a student at the
Bauhaus (1919–25) he created ‘Colour Light Plays’ (1922 onwards) that give him a place as one of the pioneers of
Kinetic art and
Light art. He taught at various art schools from 1925 to 1936, when he left Germany because of pressure from the Nazis and moved to Britain. When war broke out he was interred and in 1940 he was sent to Australia. On being released from internment in 1942 he became art master at Geelong Grammar School in Victoria, where he remained until his retirement in 1957. During these years he introduced Bauhaus teaching methods and he wrote
The Bauhaus: An Introductory Survey (1963). The paintings he produced in Australia continued the colour researches of his Bauhaus days; an example is
Composition (1946) in the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney. A retrospective exhibition of Hirschfeld-Mack's work was held in this gallery in 1974.
