Goodrich, Lloyd (1897–1987). American art historian and museum administrator, born in Nutley, New Jersey. He studied in New York at the Art Students League and the National Academy of Design, then worked in publishing for several years before joining the staff of the Whitney Museum of American Art as a writer and researcher in 1935. This was the start of a lifelong association with the museum; he was director from 1958 until his retirement in 1968, then held the title of director emeritus until his death. Goodrich played a leading role in helping to build the Whitney Museum from a moderately sized private collection to a large public institution. His writings include several standard monographs on American painters.
