Elementarism. A modified form of
Neo-Plasticism propounded by van
Doesburg in a manifesto published in
De Stijl in 1926. Whilst maintaining
Mondrian's restriction to the right angle, Elementarism abandoned his insistence on the use of strict horizontals and verticals. By introducing inclined lines and forms van Doesburg sought to achieve a quality of dynamic tension in place of the classical repose of Mondrian: ‘Through his diagonal
Counter-Compositions Van Doesburg believed he could construct a non-reductivist abstract painting capable of a convincing representation of the variety and vitality of life. This embodied a schematic rendering of the dynamics of human experience of movement and changing relationships instead of the static balancing of “universals” found in earlier De Stijl theory and practice’ ( Paul Overy,
De Stijl, 1991). Mondrian was so offended by this rejection of his principles that he left De Stijl.
