Durand-Ruel, Paul (1831–1922). The best-known member of a family of French picture-dealers. He took over the family firm in Paris in 1865 and is celebrated chiefly as the first dealer to give consistent support to the Impressionists—his belief in them often brought him close to bankruptcy. The firm was one of the main channels through which the American collector Barnes and the Russian collectors Morozov and Shchukin built up their superb representations of modern French painting. In 1911 Durand-Ruel handed over the business to his sons, Joseph (1862–1928) and Georges (1866–1933). The New York branch (established in 1886) closed in 1950 and the Paris gallery continued until 1974, run by Joseph's son, Charles (1905–1985).
