Duchamp, Suzanne (1889–1963). French painter, the sister of Marcel Duchamp, Raymond Duchamp-Villon, and Jacques Villon. She exhibited with the Section d'Or group in 1912, and after the First World War became involved with the Dada movement in Paris. In 1920 she married the Dada painter Jean Crotti (1878–1958), and as a wedding present her brother Marcel sent instructions for an ‘unhappy ready-made', consisting of a geometry text book suspended by strings from her balcony; ‘the wind had to go through the book', he said, ‘choose its own problems, turn and tear the pages'. Suzanne made a painting of it—Marcel's Unhappy Ready-Made (private col lection, 1920). Her paintings were typically in a delicately mechanistic abstract vein.
