Domínguez, Óscar (1906–1958). Spanish painter and sculptor, active mainly in France. He was born at Tenerife in the Canary Islands, the son of a banana exporter, and was self-taught as an artist. In 1927 he first visited Paris, where he came under the spell of the Surrealists, and in 1933 he helped organize a Surrealist exhibition on Tenerife. His early paintings were in the ‘veristic’ manner of
Dalí, but soon after settling permanently in Paris in 1934 he began experimenting with techniques of
automatism and he is credited with inventing
decalcomania. It is for this that he is best remembered, for the rest of his work did little more than plagiarize his more famous contemporaries. In addition to paintings, he produced Surrealist sculptures incorporating
ready-made elements.
