Dietrich, Adolf

Dietrich, Adolf (1877–1957). The best-known Swiss naive painter—the first from his country to achieve an international reputation. He was born of a peasant family in Berlingen on Lake Constance and worked as at a variety of jobs—woodsman, railwayman, ropemaker, labourer, factory hand—until he was able to devote himself full-time to painting from about 1926. His subjects included animals, country scenes, portraits, and still-lifes.
